Thanneermalai in Penang, Malaysia

Thanneermalai in Penang, Malaysia

Thanneermalai in Penang, Malaysia is with about 520 steps and the steps are shallow and can be climbed by able bodied persons.  A motorable road exists but not thrown open to public.  Penang is an island and is a 4 hours journey from Kualalumpur.  One can reach Butterworth and George Town by road.  Both have boat jettys, one has to ferry from Butterworth if one stays there, to George Town to take the bus. The ferry takes approximately 20 minutes from Butterworth and on reaching George Town, the exit of the boat jetty leaves you in the bus station of George Town.  Buses as Rapid Penang ply and no. 10 bus from this station goes to Thannermalai.   The bus stop for the temple is at the foot of the hill.  There is a shop selling flowers and other pooja items before taking up the steps, but the temple administration takes care of all the pooja materials for an archanai when the 1.5 RM ticket is taken.

The pictureque environment around the hills is a treat to watch and I was able to reach the top of the hill  in about 40 minutes.  That was a special pooja day with a family offering prayers and I had the chance to have the grand evening sandhya kala pooja in all fanfare with Nadaswaram and Melam.  The Ganesha temple at the foot of the hill started the pooja at 6 PM and at the top the pooja started only at 7 PM.

As I came down to the foot of the hill at 8.30 PM, saw the beautiful temple of Meenakshi Sundareswarar nearby and fortunate to have darshan here too.
