Mauni Amavasya (24th January 2020)
Today, the Amavasya of Makara month is known as Mauni Amavasya and as the name suggests people observe Mauna Vratham. It is also known as Maghi Amavasya. In North India, this day is considered holy to take bath in Ganges at Prayag. In fact, the whole month of Makara people take bath in Prayag (similar to the Thula Snanam in Cauvery during tamil month Aipasi) and the Amavasya Snan is referred as Amrit Yoga or Kumbha Parva.
Those who cannot go to Prayag as Ganga Jal to the bathing water or take bath in the rivers of their place. In Andhra Pradesh, this day is observed as 'Chollangi Amavasya'. On this day people donate food, clothes and other essentials to the poor and needy people.
