Sree Seshapureeswarar Temple,  Thirupampuram
ஸ்ரீஸேஷபுரீஷ்வரர் - பாம்புரநாதர்

Thirupamparam temple is at a distance of  23 Kms from Mayiladuthurai and at 7 kms from Peralam.     The place is also known as Urakapuram and Seshapuri.  The place was known by the name ‘Kulothunga Chola Chaturvedi Mangalam’ during Chola Period.  Here the vigraha is both Raghu and Kethu intertwined and the Parikara Sthalam for both.  I had darshan on 16 02 22.

The temple has a 3 tier Rajagopuram.  The Dwajasthamba Vinayagar is facing east.  The temple has two prakarams.  On the Southern side is the Mada kovil with steps for Malai Eswarar.    Climbing the steps, one can each the Sattainathar Sannidhi.  On the western Prakara Kannimoola is Sree Rajaraja Vinayagar.    Next to that is the sannidhi of Valli, Thevayanai sametha Subramanyar.

The deity Sree Seshapureeswarar is a swayambu and also known as Pambupureeswarar.
To the left of his sannidhi and in the norther corner is the Ambal Bramarambikai or Vandar Kuzhali.  On the eastern side of the Prakara are Bhairavar, Suriyan, Vishnu, Brahma, Pancha Lingas, Adi Sesha and Raghu and Kethu.

                                                               Seshapureeswarar

Bramarambikai

Once, Lord Ganesha was offering prayers to his father Lord Shiva. At that time, the serpent in the neck of Lord Shiva had a thought that he too was being worshiped by Ganesha. Seeing that Lord Shiva got angry and cursed all the serpents to lose their power. When asked for retrieval of their powers, Lord Shiva told Ashtama Nagas Anandan, Vasuki, Dakshakan, Karkodan, Sangabalan, Kuligan, Padman, Mahapadman and all serpants headed by Adishesha should come to this temple on Mahasivarathri Day and pray here to get back their powers.    In order to retrieve the powers, Adisesha and all other serpants came to earth. They offered prayers to Nageswarar temple in Kumbakonam in the morning, Thirunageswaram at noon, and the Thirupampuram Pampureswarar in the evening and Nagoor Nageswarar at night and got relieved from the curse and blessings of the Lord to regain their power.

Brahma and Agasthiyar also prayed in this temple.

The first verse out of the 10 sung by Thirugnanasambander about this temple - In Tamil -

சீரணி திகழ்திரு மார்பில் வெண்ணூலர் திரிபுர மெரிசெய்த செல்வர்
வாரணி வனமுலை மங்கையோர் பங்கர் மான்மறி யேந்திய மைந்தர்

Sree Agneeswarar Temple, Kanjanur

Kanjanur is part of Thiruvidaimarudur Taluk and is at a distance of 18 kms from Kumbakonam and 20 Kms from Mayiladuthurai.   I had darshan in this temple on 16th Feb 2022.  The east facing temple has a 5 tier Gopuram.  The Lord is Agneeswarar and Ambal is Karpagambal.  This is one of the Navagraha Sthalam and is for Sukran.  The historical names of this place are Palasavanam, Parasarapuram, Brahmapuri, Agnipuram, Kamsapuram and Mukthi Kshethram.  Lord Sukran, a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva, visited this place and worshiped him. Sukran is also known as Sukrachariyar and Kanjan. He is the son of Sage Bhirugu. As Kanjan (Sukran) worshipped the lord here, this place gets the name Kanjanur.

                                                                         Karpagambal

Once Sukrachariar was imparted the Amirtha Sanjeevini by Lord Shiva, which had the power of bringing back to life, slayed persons.  Sukracharyar used that power those asuras who lost their life in Deva-Asura war.  When Devas approached Lord Shiva for help, he swallowed Sukracharyar in a fit of rage.  Sukracharya medidated from inside the stomach of Shiva.  It was Karpagambal who prevailed on the Lord to let him out.   The Lord also conferred the status of a celestial planet on Sukracharyar.  Thus Sukran came into being, which is very much devoted to the Ambal.  Suktan was in the stomach of the Lord and he has no separate sannidhi and Lord Shiva himself blesses the devotees who offer prayers.

A Vaishnavite family living in this place, had a male child named Sudarsanar. The child was a fervent Siva devotee and always adorned with Rudraksha and Vibhuthi.  Irked people around, asked him to sit on a Hot Tripod and the child obliged and chanted Lord Siva is Supreme God three times, “சிவமே பரம்பொருள்”  sitting on the hot tripod. This picture of this event is on the Natarajar Sannidhi of this temple, as well as the nearby Perumal Temple.  Earlier Haradathar was given Upadesam by Dakshinamurthy and he forms part of the Dakshninamurty vigraha here. This Sudarsanar got the name of Haradathar too from Dakshinamurty in this temple who gave him the Sivanama Deeksha too.

A wealthy person was offering the naivedyam daily to Lord Agneeswarar.  The lord would appear daily in the dream of that person and showed him that he was taking food offered by him.  One day there was no dream of this sort and the wealthy person after enquiry found that the Lord had taken porridge from Haradathar posing as a poor Brahmin on that day.  The wealthy person reverred Haradathar and got his blessings.  There is a separate temple for Haradathar in Kanjanur.

A devotee of the Lord Siva here was living by selling bottle-gourd and known as bottle-gourd bhakthar  (சுரைக்காய் பக்தர்).  He had kept one bottle-gourd for purpose of seeds for the next cultivation.  Lord Siva in the guise of a Athithi came and asked for food.  The devotee was worried as he felt bottle gourd cannot be offered for the Athithi.  An asareeri then told that half can be offered to athithi and half for seeds.  (ஒரு பாதி விதைக்கு, ஒரு பாதி கறிக்கு).  Thus the Lord himself came to the rescue of the devotee.  A separate sannidhi of this devotee along with his wife is in this temple.

A Brahmin without knowing that a cow was around, through a bundle of grass which fell on the cow and it died.  The other brahmins told Gho-hathi dosha should be got ridden off by him and isolated him.  The Brahmin went to Haradathar to ask for overcoming the dosha and he was chanting Sivapanchatcharam while proceeding to meet him.  Haradathar told there was no necessity for any other parikara as he was reciting Sivapanchatcharam and that was enough for overcoming the dosha.  The brahmins in the place did not believe and wanted that to be proved.  Haradathar asked the Brahmin to bring grass and offer it to the Nandhi vigraha and it ate the grass given by the Brahmin proving the power of Panchatcharam.  Thus the nandhi here also is famous with this story and is known as Pul Arunthiya Nandhi - புல் அருந்திய நந்தி.

It is also believed that Kamsan, the king of Madura Puri and the son of King Ukrasenan, was suffering from some ailments. Sage Sukrachariyar advised him to visit this temple and worship the lord. Kamsan came here, worshiped the Lord and was cured of his ailments. Hence, this place also gets the name “Kamsapuram”.

Sree Lalithambigai Ambal temple, Thirumeeyachur

This temple can be reached from Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur and Kumbakonam and at a distance of 16, 27 and 33 kms respectively.  Further those who go to Peralam, can easily reach the temple which is at 1.5kms.   Peralam is between Mayiladuthurai-Thiruvarur and Kumbakonam-Karaikal routes.  I had darshan at this temple on 16th February 2022. The link for this posting is also shown in - https://sarayutoayodhya.blogspot.com/2017/01/thiruvarur-nagapattinam-temples.html

The Lord here is known as Meganathar and facing East and the temple prakaram has the following deities.   Just opposite to the Kodimaram facing South is the Sree Lalithambigai Ambal sannidhi.  In the outer prakara apart from other deities, there are the sannidhis of Sree Vidvan Mekalambika (Minnum Megalai) Ambal and Sree Sakala Bhuvaneswarar.

The 5 tier Rajagopuram has 7 kalasams and can be viewed even as you reach Thirumeichur.  At the entrance to the mahamantapam is the sannidhi of Vinayagar.  Further as we procedd we can have darshan of Lord Meganathar and the outer prakara of this sannidhi on the walls are the Narthana Ganapathi and Kshetrapuraneswarar.  Next is the separate sannidhi of Dakshinamurthy.  On the western side of the Prakara is Lingothbhavar.  Further as you circumbulate and reach the Northern side of the Prakara are Brahma, Chandrasekarar, Ashtabuja Durgai and  Rishabaruder.  Gajalakshmi is on the northwestern side of the Prakara and the sannidhi of Sree Sagala Bhuvaneswarar is here and in the south of this sannidhi is Dakshinamurthy, on the west Mahavishnu, north Brahma and Chaturmuka Chandikeswarar.   On the southern side of the Prakara is the sthala vinayagar sannidhi and Theyu Lingam.   Before reaching to the main entrance on the prakara is Arunachaleswarar.  On the eastern wall comprising of the prakara is Bhairavar, Suriayan and Akashalingam.

Sree Lalithambigai is in Manonmani Swaroopam, santhaswaroopi and gives darshan with the right leg on the Sree Chakrapeedam and the Rajarajeswari Simmsanam with abhaya Mudra.  She is freely letting her left leg towards the  ground.  Pandasuran was troubling the Devas and they went and asked for relief to Lord Siva.  He had asked the Devi to eliminate Pandasuran.  After fierce war lasting Saharsrakodi years, She won.  To overcome the fierce form of Sakthi, Lord asked her to pray and She did penance at Sripuram and there appeared 8 vak-devis from her and recited the Lalitha Sahasranama stotram and as the stotrams being recited she was calmed down and thus Sakthi as Santha swaroopini is blessing devotees here.
Neykula darisanm of Ambal can be seen during the Vijayadasami day, Masi masam Ashtami and Vaikasi month Pournami.  In front of the sannidhi,    banana trees mattai, thennai leaves are spread to around 15ft by 4ft on which the neivadyam items are filled to a height of one and a half feet and in the Sarkarai Pongal, a pit is formed to be filled with Ghee and the Ambal can be in this Ghee known as Neikula Dharisanam.

                                                     Neikula Darisanam

Sage Agasthiyar was blessed to have the Lalitha Sahasranamam taught by Sree Hayagrivar and as told by him, the Sage had darshan at this temple along with his wife Lobhamudra.  He sang in praise of the Goddess the Lalitha Navarathna Mala.

Yamadharmarajan also prayed in this temple.  Lord Suryanarayan was cursed by Lord Shiva for giving innumerable trouble to his devotee, sree Arunan, son of Bhrigu Maharishi and Vinathai.  Surya made fun of Arunan who was lame, that he cannot have the vision of the almighty and his prayers wont be answered.  That only spurred Aruna to do his prayers more fervently and the Lord blessed Arunan and cursed Surya to lose his power.   Darkness set in and Goddess asked Lord Shiva to restore the power of Surya.  When Surya came to worship the Lord here and did tapas for seven months and when he had to wait for long not getting relief from the curse, Surya in despair asked the Lord for early relief and the Goddess who got disturbed, wanted to punish him and Lord Shiva stopped that and told her that the prayers were only for the earlier curse and blessed the Goddess to be Shantanayaki here. Surya came out of the curse. He prayed Lord Shiva seated on an elephant and the vimana of this temple is like the back of an elephant - Gajaprishata Vimanam.  His rays directly falls on the Lord Meganathar during the tamil month of Chithirai, Mesha Masam on the dates 21st to 27th.

The Kshtrapraneswarar in this temple at the Koshtam is special and depicts the Lord's wish for the goddess to be a shantanayaki.

                                                           Durgai Amman

The chandikeswarar is with 4 faces

A devotee from Bangalore was reciting the Lalitha Sahasranamam regularly and in her dreams appeared an Ambal in November 1999 and asked for a Kolusu (Anklet) and she later confirmed that it was the goddess from Thirumeichur by seeing the picture from a magazine. She had made ready a kolusu and took the same to this temple to be adorned by the Goddess.  The sivachariar said there is no provision for putting the Kolusu and as the lady insisted that the Goddess herself had asked for the same to be worn, to the surprise of the sivachariar he found that the vigraha did have the provision.  Devotees offer Kolusu of 11.5" length to Goddess here and a shop nearby the temple also sells Kolusu.

Those who become unwell pray here to get cured and offer Pirandai - வச்சிரவல்லி (Cissus quadrangularis) Satham and the same is kept over a lotus flower and offered to Lord Meganathar and pooja performed and the same are given as Prasadam.
Devotees recite the Lalitha Sahasranamam and Lalitha navarathnamala in front of the goddess to get her blessings.

There are adequate shops which sell flowers, earthern lamps in front of the temple.
