The history of
the place is connected with the story in Mahabharath in the form of Agni’s
stomach ache and how he overcame that.
Agni deva on accepting ghee continuously over a period developed severe
stomach ache. Brahma suggested to have
Kandava Dahanam and to take
herbal medicines. Takshaka, the King of
snakes and friend of Indra lived in the place suggested for the dahanam and Agni
sought the help of Krishna and Arjuna for protection while burning the
forest. Lord Agni consumed the whole
forest, but when the forest was burning, the king of snakes got hurt as he was
trapped in the forest. Hence he cursed Lord Agni to lose his tejas. Lord Agni approached Lord Shiva for help who
in turn asked him to pray to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu helped Agni to regain his
tejas. Agni installed the idol of Lord Vishnu and prayed here,
known as Sree Prasanna Venkataramana Swamy. The story is to have taken place during the Dwapara Yuga.
The temple with the present structures were built during reign of Cholas in 11 thousand AD. The annual Brahmothsavam is celebrated during the month of Sravana. Kalyanam is done in all days between 9.30 am and 10.30 am and only two tickets are given, 15 persons allowed in each ticket of Rs.3000/-. The kalyanam celebration is for the Urchavar or the processional deity and it is followed the darashan of moolavar. 15 days advance booking is required for the kalyanam tickets.
The right hand of the Lord points upwards in Chikka Tirupati known as Abhaya Hastha where in Tirumala his hand points downwards known as Vaikundha Hasta. Consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi is by the side of the Lord here and there is no separate sannidhi for thayar. An unique practice here is that the chariot for the rathodhsava is made afresh each year which is 70 feet tall. They are not reused. Similar practice is followed only in Sri Jagananath temple, Puri.
