PATTEESWARAM

PATTEESWARAM

Patteswaram near Kumbakonam is famous for the Goddess Durga in the Patteeswarar temple. Kamadhenu’s daughter Patti prayed Thenupureeswarar in this temple and hence the name of the place is Patteeswaram. Gynanambigai is the name of the ambigai here. Parvathi when in penance at this place was given darshan by Siva with Jadamudi. Sage Viswamithra by performing Gayathri Japa attained Siddhi and got Brahma Rishi title at this place. It is said Sree Rama with his arrow made the Kodi theertha and made abhiseka to Easwaran to clear off the Dosha of killing Vali. That Linga is now called Ramalingam and blessing the devotees. It is also said that the above was for clearing the Chaya Hatti Dosha as he had killed Ravana who was an exponent in fine arts and an ardent devotee of lord Siva.

Goddess Durga’s sannidhi is on the northern entrance of the temple and the deity is around 6 feet tall. Durga has conch, chakkaram, Bow, Arrow, sword and Shield in her hands and the right hand shows Abhaya Hastha. She also holds the Parrot similar to Meenakshi. With a benevelonet face, she has three eyes and eight hands. Goddess Durga here is a shantha swaroopi. Raghu Kala worships is a speciality here as it is believed that Raghu himself prays here during Raghu Kala.

Kamadhenu and her calf Patti worshipped a linga here by offering her milk.  Lord Siva in this temple is known as Thenupureeswarar and consort as Palvalai Nayaki.  An important festival in this temple, is the offering of Muthupandal by the Lord to Ganasambandar, which is in June-July of the Year.  Sthal Vruksham is Vanni.
