ANBIL MARIAMMAN TEMPLE

ANBIL MARIAMMAN TEMPLE

The above picture was taken by me on 18th January 2012, in the evening hours.    The Mariamman temple at Anbil is at a walkable distance from the Arulmigu Sathyavageeswarar temple (See Arulmigu Sathyavageeswarar temple, Anbil posting) and the temple comes under the administration of Srirangam Ranganathar temple.   The beautiful vigraha of Mariamman, is by sudhai and a Astabujanga Amman and of about 5 ft tall, in seated posture and facing east.   The Gurukkal of this temple and Siva temple alternate duities in these temples every fortnight. They live very near to the temple and can be called anytime.   But this temple draws fairly large devotees from in and around Lalgudi, Thirukkattupalli and Thanjavur and hence opened at darshan times.   It is said that the Amman here is the elder sister to Mariamman of Samayapuram temple.

Though the actual history for the building of the temple is not avialable, the locals believe that the temple was built by a King Muthalagan and is estimated to be about 700 years old.    It is also said that the vigraha was under a neem tree without any structure build around before that.   Sthala Viruksham is the neem tree.

Each year, in the tamil month of Panguni (March-April) from the first Sunday to last Tuesday, the amman will in vradham with offerings of millet floor (thinai maavu - தினைமாவு), Panagam and neermor and tender coconut and on completion of vradham, she will come around the village in temple car. (தேர் பவனி).  The people from Anbil and around participate and to draw the temple car.  The celebrations will start with Kodiyetram. (Hoisting of temple flag).

Mariamman here is also called by the name Seethalaparameswari.    The amman is such a beauty and the temple is very well maintained, this temple should be a must, for those would like to have darshan at Anbil temples.

Temple timings:
7.00 AM to 1.00 PM
4.00 PM to 8.00 PM
